A goal after 12 minutes by Eric Lavine put Galway United in the second round of the FAI cup when they defeated Drogheda United at Terryland Park last night in a first round replay.
The visitors made four changes from last Sunday while Galway United had one enforced alteration when Adrian Cregg replaced flu victim Ricky O'Flaherty.
After 12 minutes the home side took the lead when Eric Lavine latched on to a kick-out by his goalkeeper Mark Cobey. Lavine, on the edge of the Drogheda United area, beat the two defenders and slotted the ball past Gareth Byrne.
After 28 minutes the former Galway United player Fergal Coleman flicked the ball on to David Nugent but Billy Cleary was on hand to put it away from danger.
The second half started off at whirlwind speed. After only 30 seconds Coleman flicked once more on to Nugent but his volley from six yards struck the right-hand post.
After 47 minutes Michael Keane set up Ryan Lucas but he shot wide.
Drogheda United could have levelled matters after 84 minutes but Darren O'Keeffe failed to control the ball on the bumpy pitch. The final few minutes saw the visitors continue to attack but Galway United held on for a home tie against Home Farm Everton in the next round.
