So much for the theory that the first weekend back after a month long break would see an upset or two, based on the assumption that the leading clubs would take time to find their stride. Well, on Saturday Loreto, Hermes and Old Alexandra in Leinster and Pegasus in Ulster helped themselves to results that suggested they'd never been away.

While all four teams still have work to do before they reach their respective goals for the season, NUIG are already celebrating after wrapping up the Connacht title yesterday with a 20 win over Yeats County. They now go through to April 21st's All-Ireland Club Championship preliminary match in Limerick, where their opponents are likely to be the University of Limerick or Bandon.

A 1-1 draw with Lansdowne on Saturday put paid to the University of Limerick's hopes of going two points clear of Bandon in second place - the teams are now level and meet in the final fixture. Bandon, though, must first play leaders Harlequins while Limerick take on Church of Ireland in their penultimate game.

In Leinster two goals from Richelle Flanagan gave Alexandra a 2-1 win over Pembroke Wanderers who, before Saturday, were the only team outside the top three with any realistic hope of stealing one of the available spots in the All-Ireland play-offs.

Loreto and Hermes, meanwhile, march relentlessly on, scoring 10 goals between them and conceding none in Saturday's 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Railway Union and UCD, respectively. If they keep this up then their meeting on the final day of the season will be a winner-takes-all affair.

Muckross suffered another demoralising defeat at the hands of Genesis (8-0) and must surely be hoping, for their own long-term benefit, that Corinthians (7-1 winners over Clontarf) can hold their lead in Senior B and replace them in the top flight next season.

In Ulster Portadown's 1-0 win over Knock strengthened their grip on second place behind Pegasus (5-0 winners over North Down). Whoever wins Leinster Senior A will face the third placed team in Ulster in the All-Ireland quarter-finals but their identity probably won't be known until the final weekend of the Ulster season - as of now Ballymoney, Belfast Harlequins, Knock and Ards all have a chance of taking third.
