Leek shines as Lansdowne go second

All-Ireland League: Landsdowne climbed to second in Division One with a 48-22 demolition of Carlow on the back pitch at Lansdowne Road.

Left wing Karl Becker grabbed three tries, while outhalf Matthew Leek was again brilliant. The former England Under-21 international amassed 28 points - a try, five penalties and four conversions. Lansdowne's other try came from centre Killian Kennedy.

Leinster interprovincial Gordon D'Arcy played on the wing.

Carlow did manage to nab a bonus point, scoring four tries, three of them from right wing Mark Buckley and one from Maurice Logue.

From the moment Connacht interprovincial centre Darren Yapp crossed for a fine individual try, Buccaneers never looked back on their way to a 25-17 victory over Belfast Harlequins at Deramore Park.

Blackrock, for whom both Leo Cullen and David Quinlan played, crossed the Constitution line three times through Conor Kilroy, replacement prop Niall Treston and Michael Carroll.

Shannon relied on a couple of veterans, Mick Galwey and Eddie Halvey, to win their battle of the Thomond Park tenants against UL Bohemian.

Galwey helped himself to a couple of tries while Halvey rounded off an excellent second half for Shannon with a try; Colm McMahon had scored in the first half but Bohemians led 16-8 at the interval.

Galwegians bounced back from the drubbing by St Mary's last week to beat UCD 20-6, albeit without securing a bonus point.

The home side had tries from scrumhalf Alex Page, Nigel Carolan and Mervyn Murphy, the students only response being a couple of penalties from outhalf Eoghan Hickey.

Terenure's woes continued, with Dungannon the latest side to crush the hapless Dubliners, winning 45-12 at Stevenson Park.

The Ulster side ran in seven tries, including contributions from representative players Bryn and Jan Cunningham and Tony McWhirter.
