Leicester City's UEFA Cup challenge ended at the first hurdle as two-goal Goran Drulic inspired Red Star Belgrade to a 4-2 aggregate victory in a first round, second leg clash in hostile Vienna.

Peter Taylor's side could have no complaints about the final outcome with their hopes flickering only briefly when Muzzy Izzet equalised on the stroke of half-time.

The Yugoslavs, unhappy at being forced to play on a neutral ground because of the conflicts in Belgrade, were wildly cheered by 8,000 fans in the Gerhard Hanapi Stadium.

Their pace, movement and one-touch football constantly unhinged the normally reliable Leicester rearguard who could not cope with the skill of Drulic.

In addition to scoring twice he also laid on the decisive second goal for Ivan Gvozdenovic as Red Star completely dominated the second 45 minutes.

There was an intimidating atmosphere in the stadium. Flares were thrown at the Leicester fans and monkey chants were aimed constantly at Ade Akinbiyi and Andrew Impey. Red Star were the first to settle and came close to taking the lead after just two minutes when Drulic volleyed just over from close range after exchanging passes with Gvozdenovic.

Leicester looked like they were weathering the early storm but then Drulic put Red Star into the lead after 22 minutes. Robbie Savage gave the ball away in midfield and the mistake was seized upon by Gorjan Bunjevcevic who sent a long crossfield ball into the path of Drulic who scored.

Two minutes before the interval Leicester's growing momentum was rewarded when Izzet produced an equaliser.

Within two minutes of the second half Red Star were back in front. Drulic turned goal-maker as he turned the ball into the path of Gvozdenovic who was played onside by Izzet. He kept his cool before drilling a low shot past Flowers and under the body of Izzet. The contest was killed off in the 70th minute when Drulic displayed more clinical finishing to fire his side into a two-goal lead.
