Leinster produce explosive display

ALL the fireworks - in this under-21 representative match at Donnybrook yesterday - came in an explosive first half

ALL the fireworks - in this under-21 representative match at Donnybrook yesterday - came in an explosive first half. And they were all launched by a voracious Leinster side looking to condemn New Zealand to a third defeat in four games on Irish soil.

By the break, this goal had been achieved. New Zealand trailed 29-0 and had been completely outplayed in all facets of the game, save that of the line-out. Ironically, Leinster's first big break through came from one such line- out. The ball was secured and driven 10 metres to the line. Number eight Aidan McCullen more recognised as a second row, got the vital touch.

Out half Emmet Farrell made the difficult conversion and added a penalty midway through the half.

Leinster's second try was a real gem. Hooker Bernard Jackman made the initial thrust inside his own half, before Garret Gannon, Terry O'Beirne and Billy Treacy all contributed in bringing play deep into the All Blacks 22.

A quick ruck ball and four passes later, right wing Simon Doggett outpaced the cover into the right corner - copybook stuff.

Leinster high paced support play propagated a continuity in their game that was the undoing of the Kiwi's defence. Farrell converted his own try and centre Michael Smyth profited from Farrell's elusive run that was too much for three would-be tacklers in the 39th minute. Another Farrell conversion had the Kiwi's staring at a singularly humiliating half time scoreline.

Unbelievably, the only other points in this free running spectacle came from a Kelvin Howarth 45th minute penalty.
