LEICESTER and Northern Ireland midfielder, Neil Lennon, was fined £500 and warned about his future conduct after being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute at an FA disciplinary hearing in Sheffield yesterday.

Lennon was alleged to have made obscene gestures at Newcastle fans during Leicester's 2-0 Premiership victory at Filbert Street in October.

Yesterday's punishment follows just a week after he failed to overturn his sending off against Norwich in the FA Cup.

"It was just a bit of frustration really," explained Lennon, who entered a plea of mitigation at the hearing at Sheffield's Royal Victoria Hotel.

"It was a very important game for Leicester and I was annoyed at getting booked in the match. I just want to put this and the ban for the sending off behind me.

"I have a three-match ban at an important stage of the season for us and I have to go and cool my heels and learn from his.

PFA assistant chief executive Mick McGuire, who represented the Northern Ireland international at the hearing, stressed: "Neil has a good record and it was a very fair hearing - they treated it with the utmost leniency.

"I have known Neil ever since he was an apprentice with Manchester City, and this was not in his character.
