Golf:Lisa Maguire secured the Lancôme Irish Women's Close championship for the first time with a convincing 5 and 4 win over Mary Dowling in today's final at Fota Island Golf Club, Cork.
The 14-year-old from Slieve Russell carded no less than six birdies on the opening eight holes, scoring that Dowling - or anyone for that matter – couldn’t keep pace with.
Maguire put a run of three birdies together from the third before another barrage came with a further run of three birdies from the sixth. To her credit Dowling also birdied the eighth and ninth but that still left the New Ross golfer four-down at the turn – Maguire had just 11 putts for the front nine.
Maguire’s only dropped shot of the day came at the 11th where she missed a six-foot par putt. However, with a seemingly unassailable lead, the Cavan teenager parred the next three holes to end the match on the 14th.
