SETANTA CUP: Lisburn Distillery 2 UCD 0GOALS from Gary Browne and Scott Davidson sent UCD crashing out of the Setanta Cup at Ballyskeagh last night. The Dubliners paid the ultimate price for not punishing the Irish League side at the UCD Bowl a fortnight ago.
Browne, who will join champions Linfield at the end of the season, lashed home an 18th minute penalty, while substitute Davidson bagged the killer striker four minutes from time.
“We blew it at our place,” insisted UCD boss Martin Russell. “And, we even failed to take numerous chances tonight. We have only ourselves to blame.”
Distillery were forced to hold off a second half onslaught before securing their involvement in the quarter-finals of the tournament later this month.
Distillery broke the deadlock on 18 minutes after Glenn Ferguson sent Gary Thompson galloping into the penalty area, only to be impeded by UCD’s new Spanish defender Yael Haro. Browne scored from the spot.
UCD stormed from the blocks after the interval Paul Corry’s inswinging corner was headed wide by the totally unmarked Haro.
The visitors went close again on 60 minutes. Ciaran Nangle’s wickedly struck free kick flashed inches past of the head of Corry. Billy Brennan was then forced into action, beating down a stinging drive from Corry – it was all one way traffic a this stage.
However, Davidson ensured the Whites will be in action in the next phase of the competition, turning sweetly on a David Cushley free kick on 86 minutes to completely wrong foot Gerard Barron.
