Llanelli's hopes depart as Easterby injured early on

Heineken Cup / Wasps 48 Llanelli 14: A week of self-flagellation clearly works for Wasps

Heineken Cup / Wasps 48 Llanelli 14: A week of self-flagellation clearly works for Wasps. Seven days after their dire performance at Stradey Park they yesterday ran in six tries, three by Tom Voyce.

Both sides still have mathematical hopes of reaching the quarter-finals, but it looks unlikely a second team will qualify from the pool with holders Toulouse going through comfortably.

Wasps, led by their front row, were stronger all over the field. Ian McGeechan and Shaun Edwards made five changes. Mark van Gisbergen returned at fullback, with Josh Lewsey moving to centre alongside Stuart Abbott.

Matt Dawson was relegated to the bench from where he watched Irishman Eoin Reddan have an impressive hour at scrumhalf.

Within seven minutes Wasps had gained a 10-point lead. Three points up thanks to an Alex King penalty, Raphael Ibanez threw short to Simon Shaw at Wasps' first lineout, took the return and made 10 yards before the ball went back to King with Voyce steaming up on the outside and a yawning gap ahead of him.

Another Ibanez break seven minutes later led to several team warnings administered to Llanelli captain Simon Easterby, whose game lasted only five minutes longer.

Ireland's captain tangled with a forceful hand-off from Wasps' Lawrence Dallaglio, and left for hospital with an eye injury - thought to be a cut to the inside of his eye-lid - suffered just 20 minutes into the game.

The club were yesterday awaiting a medical update.

Easterby's replacement, Jonathan Mills, barely had time to get his hands into a ruck before referee Alan Lewis lost patience and waved the first of three yellow cards. But by then Wasps were out of sight.

Prop Ali McKenzie made the best of a ball set up by Paul Sackey, spun it on to Lewsey and with one step inside his man, England's fullback negotiated a 40-yard corridor to the line. George Skivington also scored to make it 27-7 at the break.

Llanelli were living on scraps and the generosity of Shaw. The lock's lopey pass from the base of a ruck was pounced upon by Matthew Watkins who went in under the posts.

McKenzie was binned for for a high tackle but Voyce scored twice to claim the bonus point. Llanelli's replacement fullback Barry Davies scored the final try of the game.
