MARY LOGUE will set a new Irish record of 87 international caps when she lines out against Wales on Saturday at Belfield. She equalled Jacqui Potter's record of 86 international caps a month ago when Ireland played England in the two centenary matches.
As Logue breaks records, two new players begin their international careers. Patricia Conway, of Old Alexandra, and Catriona O'Kelly, of Loreto, have been added to the Irish squad for the two matches against Wales.
The Irish squad for the centenary matches against England was too experienced for some people's liking. Most of the players on that occasion had over 10 caps to their credit and only one new cap was awarded, that of Carol Devine of Railway Union. So it is good to see new players coming into the squad now. One notable absence is Sandra O'Gorman. She is again unavailable due to work commitments,
Ireland's record against Wales is good. On their last two meetings Ireland won one (1994) and drew the other (1995). However, on both occasions Ireland scored only one goal, a statistic they will be keen to improve on.
Terry Gregg, Irish coach, was disappointed after the centenary matches that Ireland had not used their many chances to score a couple of goals. He was happy, though, with the increased number of chances that Ireland created, and felt that Ireland were a match for any team if they could convert those chances to goals. We shall see.
