Turning the tables: Aussie media in denial as noisy neighbours continue to rack up medals

So, how gracious is the Australian media being towards New Zealand's success at the Games? Not very, according to the New Zealand Herald. They claim their neighbours have been going to wacky lengths to ignore their medal haul to date.

“Australian media are in denial – the first stage of grief – at seeing New Zealand above their team on the Olympic medal table,” they said.

“Gold medal wins to Hamish Bond and Eric Murray and Mahe Drysdale propelled New Zealand nine spots ahead of Australia to tenth in the medal count last night . Channel 9, the official free Olympic broadcaster in Australia, displayed a medal table with only the top nine countries and later admitted Australians did not want to be reminded of New Zealand’s success.”

And how much are the Kiwi media enjoying their buddies’ struggles? Quite a deal, it seems. “Just went over to Aussie TV pool to ask if they need to borrow a gold. Didn’t get a word out before they all yelled ‘we’re busy, can’t talk’,” tweeted TVNZ reporter Garth Bray.

Not pleased: boxer Kumar calls foul as he loses to Brit

Manoj Kumar wasn't best pleased after his 20-16 defeat to Britain's Thomas Stalker on Saturday night, the Indian boxer hinting the scoring favoured the home fighter just a little:

"It doesn't look like an Olympic Games but more like a district competition because if it's Great Britain in the ring, it doesn't matter who's against them. It's like a district competition where there's lots of cheating, cheating, cheating."

India's Cuban coach Blas Iglesias Fernandez also believed his fighter was "robbed", but an Indian boxing contingent member insisted there would be no appeal.

"It's a heartbreaking loss and the result was unfair," he said, "but we will not protest because we don't want to be seen as bad losers.

As if we weren't nervous enough about Katie Taylor's fight today against Britain's Natasha Jonas.
