Bray Wanderers 1 Longford Town 3:Bottom-of-the-table Longford Town kept alive their slim hopes of avoiding relegation with a sensational and fully deserved victory over an out-of-sorts Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds last night.

Patrick Kavanagh threatened early on for Bray after accepting a pass on the right from James O'Shea. The winger brilliantly skipped past two defenders but could not get enough power in his parting effort to trouble Shay Kelly in the Longford goal.

The visitors went ahead on 15 minutes when Kelly's long clearance was flicked on by Jamie Duffy for David Mooney to get in a shot only half-blocked by goalkeeper Steve Williams. The ball rebounded off the incoming Mooney from the edge of the box into the unguarded net.

Bray continued to dominate in the second half only for Gary McCabe to shoot over when well placed after Alan Cawley had inevitably created the opening. But twice Robbie Martin went close in dangerous breakaways for the visitors.

Then came two sensational late goals for Longford. A diagonal ball from the right by Duffy allowed Mooney to win the race for possession with Williams on 83 minutes. That let Dessie Baker in for the easiest of finishes.

A minute later Mooney collected the ball 30 yards from goal and powered his way past defender Delaney to shoot home his second of the night from the edge of the box.

Bray grabbed a late consolation goal on 89 minutes when substitute John Mulroy lofted the ball over advancing goalkeeper Kelly.
