National League Premier Division/Longford Town 3 Waterford United 0: Longford Town picked up their second home win in three days with this merited victory over Waterford at Flancare Park on Saturday.
Longford pressed forward at every given opportunity early on. Chances came and went for Dean Fitzgerald, Davy Byrne and Robbie Martin inside the opening 10 minutes.
Waterford scarcely troubled the Longford rearguard. Paul Hopkins did have a very good chance for them in the seventh minute but he miskicked when well positioned to at least trouble Mick Dempsey in the home goal.
The home side opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Johnny Martin was instrumental in the breakthrough. Dessie Baker headed Martin's excellent cross back across goal and Alan Kirby was on hand to smash the ball home from close range.
Waterford did up their performance in the second half but could not find a way past a well-marshalled Longford defence.
The saving grace for the closing 45 minutes was a Davy Byrne free-kick which doubled Longford's lead just four minutes from time. The home side added a third goal in stoppage time. Gary Cronin was impeded inside the penalty area by Chris Deans. Byrne slotted home his second goal from the spot.
