TWO TIMES Wannamaker Mile champion, Niall Bruton bounced back from a surprise 800 metre defeat to set a new stadium record over 1500 metres at yesterday's Nenagh BLE Games.
Bruton, who is building up for the World indoor championships in Paris in March made all the early running in the 800 metres, only to be outfoxed by UCD's Andrew Walker, who sat in and kicked close to home for the win.
Bruton clearly learned from the experience and it showed as he ran a much more measured and 1500 metres in which he set the stadium record of 3:51.91. The Dubliner ran a cagey first half of the race before stepping up the pace later on, kicking 400 metres bout to blitz the rest of the field.
Home favourite, and fellow Olympian, Gary Ryan also maintained his excellent early season form as he stepped up from his favourite 200 metres to win over 400 metres despite suffering from the flu.
UCD's Siobhan Hoey also kept up her splendid form as she was just one centimetre away from setting a new national record for the [triple jump.
Hoey, winner of the triple jump at last weekend's Birmingham meet, jumped 12.27 metres.
