WEST OF IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIP: England's Jonathan Hurst leads after the first day of qualifying in the West of Ireland Amateur Championship at Rosses Point in Co Sligo.
In difficult conditions the Shaw Hill member carded an opening 71 to lead by one shot. Shane Lowry is favourite for the first domestic "major" of the year and the Esker Hills player signed for a 75 windy conditions to be well-placed going into today's second qualifying round.
Defending champion Joe Lyons from Galway was two shots further
back after his opening 77.
The scheduled first day's play was entirely lost due to high
winds and balls moving on the greens, so the Radisson SAS Sligo
sponsored event will run over to a Wednesday finish.
This year's field was already restricted to just 120 players, due to the lack of daylight given the early Easter. The field will be cut down to the top 64 after today's action, who will then compete for honours in the matchplay phase of the championship.
