The lure of Carton House, near Maynooth, is proving to be an attractive one, and the developers have decided to extend the inquiries for the current tranche of membership for a limited period. "We're endeavouring to ensure there will be a good, friendly club atmosphere here," said Conor Mallaghan. "That is certainly our aspiration, and, so far, from those who have committed to membership, the signs are extremely encouraging that we will achieve that objective." Indeed, in order to create such a special intimate atmosphere, club membership is being kept to about 500.
Since membership inquiries started, the interest has been very strong: the first tranche of shares was offered less than 12 months ago for £10,000 and, since then, shares have risen in increments to the current level of £25,000 which is available for a limited time. Membership - which is a redeemable preference share - entitles the nominee to play the two championship courses being developed at Carton House and is transferable within the family structure.
The Mark O'Meara-course is due to open for play next spring, while the Colin Montgomerie-designed course is scheduled to be ready in spring 2003.
