Neil Gough from the St Paul's club in Waterford won his seventh Irish title in the welterweight division of the National Senior Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin last night.

Competing in the finals of this division for the ninth successive time Gough scored a significant 19-7 victory over Kevin Cumiskey from Tralee. Cumiskey was unable to match Gough in any area of the fight and was clearly outclassed by his vastly more experienced opponent. Earlier, Liam Cunningham from The Saints Club in Belfast out-pointed Darren Campbell from Glin while Damian McKenna from Drogheda beat William Waite from The Holy Family Club in Belfast 6-1.

In the featherweight division it was much closer as Bernard Dunne from CIE and Terry Carlyle from Sacred Heart had to wait on a countback to decide the contest. Both fighters were tied at seven each at the end of their four two-minute rounds but Dunne was ultimately given the verdict 44-34.

In the lightweight division the reigning Irish champion Eugene McEneaney from Dundalk was beaten by Aodh Carlyle from the Sacred Heart Club in Dublin on a score of 13 points to eight. In the super-heavyweight division John Kinsella from Crumlin stopped John McDonagh from Westport in the first round in a contest in which the Mayo boxer was clearly out of his depth.

The Reynolds brothers from Ballinacarow in Sligo won two titles. The back-to-back victories set off a celebration which looked likely to go well into next week.

Firstly, in the heavyweight division, Stephen Reynolds, who boxes out of the St Joseph's club in Sligo, beat John Kiely from the Corpus Christi Club in Limerick on a 12-1 score.

Then, in the last bout of the night, there was victory for Stephen's brother, Alan, at light-heavyweight. From the start, it was quite clear that he was going to bring up the double.

Leading his opponent, Tommy Sheahan from St Michael's in Athy, by 3-5 at the end of the second round, Reynolds extended that advantage to 15-4 at the finish.

Shea Neary takes his exhilarating brand of fighting to Dublin on April 17th, when he makes the fifth defence of his WBU light-welterweight title against American Mike Griffith.

Neary, from Liverpool, has won all 21 of his fights and thrilled fans with his non-stop style.
