Golf:Slieve Russell's Leona Maguire booked her place in the matchplay stages of the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship with a level par 72 at Sherry Golf Club in Cadiz.

Maguire qualified in joint third ahead of the last 32 knockout stages with a two-round 146 aggregate (74,72). Ines Lescudier from France and Germany’s Vicki Troeltsch led the qualifying with 142 totals after respective second rounds of 68 and 70.

The Cavan teenager will now take on Spain’s Mandy Goyos Ball in the first round.

Royal County Down Ladies golfer, Danielle McVeigh, faced an uphill battle to qualify after her opening round of 79. The Annalong golfer responded well with a second round 71 which was good enough to qualify.

However it means the Irish international will be up against one of her familiar team mates as she will take on Leona’s twin-sister, Lisa, in the first round. Lisa shot rounds of 77,73 to finish on the same 150 qualifying mark as McVeigh.

Ireland’s fourth member of the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) High Performance squad, Gillian O’Leary from Cork, failed to make the cut after adding a 79 to her opening 80.

The 97-player field was reduced to 32 after the two-day cut fell at nine over par.
