Vartry Lakes took the two points needed to record their first success in the FBD sponsored Barton Cup with a 7-3 win overall win over Kilkenny after the second leg in Roundwood on Saturday. Leading 4-1 after the first outing in Kilkenny, they looked to be cruising to a notable first success when they led in all matches through nine holes in the final. However, they had to wait for almost two hours for Darren Murray and Dermott Browne; Martin Smyth and David Briggs to both win on the 15th before the celebrations began. In the top match the Kilkenny pair of Pat Butler and Sean Boland came from three down early on to win on the 18th against Graham Smith and Alan Horan while it was a similar story from international Eddie Power and Maurice Ryan who were four down after six but played some excellent golf around the turn to go one up after 12 and they were still one up playing the 18th when called-in.
However, the 4-1 deficit was too much for Kilkenny to pull back and Murray and Browne were always in control against Graham Nugent and Liam Cody as were Martin Smyth and David Briggs against PJ Martin and Derek Shelly. Insurance for Vartry was that Michael Devlin and Philip Dutton were also up against Jim White and Aidan Phelan when called -in.
