US TOUR: American JJ Henry finally tasted success on the US Tour at the 178th attempt yesterday, and with it jumped from 26th to sixth in the US Ryder Cup standings.

The 31-year-old, ranked 116th in the world, won the Buick Championship by three shots from compatriots Hunter Mahan and Ryan Moore, US amateur champion two years ago.

Henry took advantage of the absence of the world's top 20, going clear of the field with a third-round 63 and finishing with a 67 for a 14 under par total of 266.

His leap in the Ryder Cup table knocks Davis Love out of an automatic spot.

LPGA TOUR: Michelle Wie, aiming to become the youngest winner of a major at the age of 16, and world number one Annika Sorenstam were locked in battle going into the final round of the US Women's Open.

With the final 36 holes taking place yesterday, after Thursday's play was abandoned due to fog, Wie had a third-round even-par 71 in strong, gusting winds to close the two-shot overnight gap on Sorenstam, who had a 73.

On even-par 213, the pair shared the lead with 20-year-old American Brittany Lincicome.

The leader board remained packed with possible winners, and it was still a long haul towards the $560,000 first prize.

It was the Italian's second Tour title and came with a winner's cheque of €32,709.
