Monaghan United - 0, UCD - 3: Robert Martin started the match on the substitutes' bench but came on after 14 minutes to replace the injured Alan McNally and went on to score a hat-trick in the second half.

For the first half-hour Monaghan United had the better of the chances, Trevor Vaughan missing two good opportunities to put them ahead.

But on the half-hour the home goal had an amazing escape when Paul Doolan shot wide from inside the six yard box.

In the 32nd minute the home goal had another escape when John Martin's close range shot rebounded off keeper John Browne's body and the keeper was lucky to regain possession in the resultant scramble.

But Monaghan went downhill after that and only a great save by Browne a minute before half-time denied Robert Martin.

Martin's first goal came in the 61st minute when Browne dropped an easy lob in his goalmouth and Martin was on the spot to push it home. Four minutes later he got a second, again with a close range shot in a crowded goalmouth.

He completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute when he picked up a ball in space to shoot past Browne unchallenged.
