Derry City - 0 Shelbourne - 0: Derry City's Ciaran Martyn was hailed a hero at the Brandywell on Saturday night, the Sligo man sending Shelbourne goalkeeper Steve Williams the wrong way to send the home side into the FAI Cup quarter-finals.

With neither side having hit the net after a tense 120 minutes of play in this third-round replay, the attendance of 2,500 will have appreciated the quality of spot-kicks from both sides.

When Alan Cawley crashed Shelbourne's fourth penalty off the crossbar, Martyn took full advantage to send Derry through to the next round.

For new Brandywell boss Stephen Kenny it will have proved an interesting evening, the ex-Bohemians manager was taking charge of his first competitive game at home.

"I felt we deserved to win," he declared afterwards. "We played very well over both games and having created the better chances in this match, I don't think Shelbourne will begrudge us the victory given their superb season so far," said Kenny.

From a Shelbourne point of view, manager Pat Fenlon was disappointed at the way his side lost the game: "We played very well in the second half but this is what can happen in the cup. Nothing seemed to be going for us and it was a very disappointing way to lose the game," he said.
