Mary IT 1-18 Dublin IT 0-15:Eamon Cregan's Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, are through to the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-finals for the very first time.
Limerick’s 1973 All-Ireland SHC medallist and former county team manager Cregan has overseen a mini-miracle at Mary I who applied successfully, for a return to the Fitzgibbon Cup this year.
At Parnells GAA club in Coolock yesterday, two of their leading stars, Clare’s John Conlon and Limerick’s Declan Hannon, scored 0-12 between them.
Conlon hit seven points, including six frees, while four of Hannon’s five points were from placed balls.
Tipperary senior squad member Seán Curran played a key role too, hitting 0-2 from play, while Robert O’Donnell from Limerick was superb at full-back. Trailing by four points twice in the first half, Mary I recovered to lead 0-11 to 0-9 at half-time.
They were firmly on their way to victory when DIT goalkeeper and captain Finn McGarry fumbled Lar Considine’s attempted point in the 41st minute, the sliotar dropping agonisingly over the line for the only goal of the game.
