Maughan's men stay injury free

Other than the members of the Kiltimagh team, which reached the first-ever Mayo senior final in the club's 112-year history, the happiest man in James Stephens' Park, Ballina, yesterday was the county's football manager, John Maughan.

He saw his charges come through yesterday's two senior football semi-finals unscathed in advance of the All-Ireland final. Even though they had two players sent off, Kiltimagh were the surprise packets, defeating pre-match favourites Kiltane 1-7 to 1-6. In the other semi-final, last season's All-Ireland club finalists Knockmore stayed on course for another Mayo title with a well-earned 0-12 to 0-11 win over Crossmolina.

Maughan was given plenty of food for thought by 32-year-old former county player Padraig Brogan, who was in top form for Knockmore, kicking eight of his side's points, four from long-range frees.

Also on form was Kieran McDonald. He was Crossmolina's chief marksman with six points, but team-mates James Nallen and P J Loftus had quiet games.
