UI Maynooth 2-11 UCC 2-8:NUI MAYNOOTH knocked out holders UCC at Dangan, Galway, yesterday as UCC manager Billy Morgan was left fuming after Mark Reen's effort was ruled wide with two points between the sides.
Maynooth got a good start with points from Seán Hurley and Paul Cahillane but then Mark Collins drilled the ball to the net. Stephen O’Brien added a point but Maynooth hit three points in succession, with Mickey Newman getting his third of the half.
Maynooth, who led by 0-6 to 1-2 at the break, restarted well with Hurley pointing, while Newman and David Quinn landed goals for a 2-8 to 1-3 lead. UCC rallied as O’Brien fisted a goal and Kevin O’Driscoll, Barry O’Driscoll, Reen and Paul Geaney pointed to get within a point of Maynooth. Cahillane kicked a point for Maynooth and Newman ensured the win after Reen’s effort was denied.
