Connacht Under-21 FC first round: Mayo 0-15 Leitrim 1-9: Two points from frees by Conor Mortimer and one from play by substitute John Morrin in the last 12 minutes ensured Mayo's passage to the Connacht under-21 semi-final at Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday.
Before that, Leitrim had matched the Mayo men all the way after the sides had been on level terms on nine occasions.
Mayo took an early lead with points from Mortimer and Seán Mangan, but Leitrim went ahead with a James Glancy goal in the seventh minute.
James Holohan stretched Leitrim's lead with a point from play, but Mayo were on level terms by the 11th minute after Andy Moran and Alan Dillon put over points.
At the interval it was level again following two Mayo points from Conor Mortimer while Declan Maxwell replied with two similar Leitrim scores. Noel Doonan and Glancy also exchanged points.
Leitrim grabbed the lead after the restart with a Dermot Kennedy point from play, but Mortimer levelled in the next minute when he put over a 35-metre free.
It was still level by the end of the third quarter after Mortimer put over three Mayo points while Doonan shot two Leitrim points in reply and Glancy one.
But Mayo held Leitrim scoreless in the final quarter when Mortimer added two further points and John Morrin one.
Leitrim was reduced to 14 men in the last minute when Shane Foley received a second yellow card.
