MAYO GAINED revenge for their defeat in last year's final when they pipped Galway at the post in a low scoring but tantalisingly close Connacht final at McHale Park yesterday.

It was a case of the much vaunted Galway attack leaving their shooting boots behind as they managed 11 first half wides, and trailed at the interval by 0 4 to 0 3.

In the second half John Concannon tied the game for Galway at 0-5 each, but points from Sean Roughneen and Shane Fitzmaurice, who had arrived back from holiday with the Mayo team in Tunisia earlier in the morning, landed the crucial Mayo points.

From there to the finish Galway tried everything they could but were unable to break down the outstanding Mayo backs. Padraig, Joyce from a free left only one point between the sides with six minutes remaining. The same player had a chance to force the game into a replay with the last kick of the game but his free kick was well off target.
