Kyle McCallan struck his second century for Ireland at Paisley yesterday and followed up with four wickets to earn victory over Wales by 17 runs in the Triple Crown series.

Opener McCallan batted through 47 of Ireland's 50 overs, hitting seven boundaries in a composed 100 off 140 balls. With the captain Stephen Smyth contributing a quick 43 and Ed Joyce making his first runs of the tournament, a total of 224-6 was imposing.

Veteran spinner Matt Dwyer cemented Ireland's position with an early spell of 3-22 but it was McCallan in his subsidiary role as off spinner who ended a worrying fifth-wicket stand of 70 and then cashed in on some wild walloping to finish with 4-53 as Wales were bowled out for 207.

The man of the match decision was not long in coming but McCallan's efforts were not quite enough to lift the title as England Amateurs beat Scotland by two runs at Hamilton Crescent.

The tournament ended with three teams tied on two wins each and it needed a ridiculously complicated and unexplainable runrate calculation to conclude that England were champions ahead of Ireland in second place. Winless Wales again went home with the wooden spoon.
