AFTER a stage of 75 miles in the Tour of Ulster on Saturday and two more stages yesterday at Enniskillen, David McCann of the Phoenix club, Belfast leads by 36 seconds from Karl Donnelly going into the final 70 miles today.
McCann has been in America since early in the year and returned home on Wednesday obviously in very good form. He rode across America from Florida to California and contested several races along the way recording three wins.
One of McCann's triumphs was in a stage of the Vuelta de la Bisbee in California where he beat the record that stood to the credit of Greg LeMond.
At the finish on Saturday McCann led in Donnelly with Dave McCall best in the sprint for third place 32 seconds behind. Then yesterday's second stage of 60 miles went to John Blackwell of Kanturk with Andy Mills from Liverpool two seconds behind and Scot Richard Moore was next. McCann held his lead over Donnelly with Mills third.
In the evening time trial over 7.6 miles McCann was fastest in 16 minutes and 28 seconds. Scott Hamilton and Eddie McMahon were his closest challengers.
