Tony McCoy may have to wait until at least tomorrow to ride the three winners he needs to chalk up 1,000 career victories.

The champion jockey was denied the chance to reach the magic figure yesterday when the meeting at Ayr, where he had four booked rides, was abandoned due to waterlogging.

After having a surprise day-off, McCoy will be back in action today at Fontwell. However, he has just two rides at the West Sussex track - Piped Aboard for Martin Pipe in the 1.40 and on the John Jenkins-trained Zafarelli in the 2.10.

The champion jockey is currently fifth in the all-time list behind Richard Dunwoody (1699), Peter Scudamore (1678), John Francome (1138) and Stan Mellor (1035).

Meanwhile, Ted Stanners, who has held a licence for just seven weeks, goes into battle with Dawn Leader in Saturday's £80,000 Tripleprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

The eight-year-old, owned by sponsors Bonusprint, had some good form when trained by Jim Old and ended last season when third to Flagship Uberalles in the Sandeman Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.

Stanners who has a team of 21 at Compton, near East Ilsley, said: "At the moment everything is all right and the plan is to go to Cheltenham. We have put David Casey down to ride, he is very good and we want to get a regular rider for the horse for this season.

"Dawn Leader is the best horse I have, he missed Cheltenham last season so there was obviously a problem, but how much of a problem he had before going to Liverpool I don't know, but touch wood he is all right now."

He went on: "He seems to be fine, he has won over two miles four furlongs at Sandown, running away with it. He is good enough to go with them in two mile races, but he does not have that finishing kick over the trip.

"I think the longer distance suits him better and ideally good ground or the easy side of good would suit him. It would be nice to go there and pick up a race like this."
