McCoy lands record haul

Tony McCoy achieved yet another landmark in his career when becoming the first jump jockey to ride 2,500 winners

Tony McCoy achieved yet another landmark in his career when becoming the first jump jockey to ride 2,500 winners. The champion jockey added another chapter to his remarkable story with victory by a distance on Kanpai, the 4 to 11 favourite, for John O'Shea in the World Bet Exchange Novices' Hurdle at Huntingdon yesterday.

And for good measure he made it 2,501 on 1 to 8 shot Grecian Groom for Jonjo O'Neill in the World Bet Exchange Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat Race.

"I didn't know for sure until someone told me. It's good to be lucky enough to ride that many winners," said a typically modest McCoy. "But I suppose if you're in the position I'm in and get to ride all the horses I do, perhaps I should have ridden a lot more."

McCoy only returned to the saddle last week after eight weeks out with a broken wrist.

Meanwhile, Justified is set to make his seasonal reappearance at Limerick this weekend with connections eyeing a crack at the King George VI Chase later in the year. The seven-year-old enjoyed a profitable campaign when keeping some lofty company as a novice chaser last season, in which he landed four contests in total. The highlight came at Fairyhouse in April, where he ran on strongly over two and a half miles to inflict a three-length defeat on In Compliance and claim his first success in Grade One company.

He will drop back in trip to two miles and one furlong in Sunday's Listed event, with handler Eamonn Sheehy currently delighted with his condition. "He's entered for a second-season novice race in Limerick on Sunday. He's in mighty form and I'm very happy with him," he said.

"He and Rathgar Beau have had a racecourse gallop together and a little school over fences so he's well on target and the King George is his realistic long-term plan at this point.Rathgar Beau will make his eagerly-awaited comeback in the National Lottery Agent Champion Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday.
