THE NERVELESS free taking of Patrician High School, Carrickmacross, centre forward John McDaid was enough to consign Roscommon CBS to defeat in this Senior Football `B' Final at Croke Park yesterday.

McDaid was the central figure, while Paudie Swinburne and Stephen Conlon, down the left wing outflanked the Roscommon rearguard far too often. This trio accounted for all but a single point (which came from midfielder Eamon Hoey) of the winners total with McDaid's seven point contribution leading the way.

He mixed accurate free taking with rapier like thrusts through the heart of the losers defence. At the other end, Gerry Lohan's unsteady start gave way to a worthy input that saw him on target seven times himself.

But, Lohan's supporting cast, did not quite scrub up to the polish of Patrician's ensemble. Their best route to goal was undoubtedly through the burly figure of full forward Colin Finneran. His power was a real handful for the winners.

However, the Westerners showed little inclination to load their dice on Finneran's ball winning ability and uncanny accuracy.

Given their style of play, Roscommon could easily have been the winners. In fact, when replacement Kenneth Hegarty latched on to a pass from Gerry Kelly to drill home a shot in off the butt off Gavin Sheenhan left post to put them into the lead 1-10 to 0-11 for the first time in the game after 47 minutes, it looked the more likely scenario.

But, this merely concentrated the Patrician minds. McDaid (3) and Conlon hit the critical points as all that Roscommon could muster was a Danny Costello minor. McDaids last two frees in the 57th (to level it) and 60th (to win it) minutes were executed under extreme pressure in unflappable manner and he never looked like missing either one.
