UCD - 1 Waterford Utd - 0: Once again inspired by their captain, Tony McDonnell, who scored his fifth goal in six games, UCD heaped further misery on troubled Waterford United as they booked their passage through to the semi-finals of the League Cup at Belfield.
As they did in the previous round against Shamrock Rovers, UCD fielded a weakened side with eight changes from their 5-1 drubbing to Cork City on Friday night. But, as against Rovers, they were well organised and much as Waterford enjoyed greater possession, they created few chances before McDonnell struck for the game's only goal on 55 minutes.
Anthony Murphy's long throw-ins had troubled Waterford earlier and one finally told as McDonnell rose unchallenged to bounce his header past the despairing dive of Packie Holden.
Waterford forced five first-half corners, the fourth of which brought the only real scoring chance of the opening period on 32 minutes when Willie Doyle's header from Colm Heffernan's delivery was cleared off the line by Aaron McEniff.
UCD defender Conor Kenna had to head clear a goal-bound shot from Heffernan within three minutes of the restart before UCD snatched their lead which Waterford never really looked like wresting from them.
