Golf:Graeme McDowell starts the defence of the Andalucia Masters title at Valderrama tomorrow admitting he has "a bit of a love-hate relationship" with the Spanish course.
The Ryder Cup hero leads a seven-strong Irish contingent at the event and knows four days of hard work await anyone hoping to claim the €500,000 first prize.
“I love how special a place it is, but hate how tough it can be,” said McDowell, who won by two shots on a score of just three under last year.
“When the wind is up, well, good luck. But I like that challenge it’s a grafter’s course.”
After a 2010 he will never forget — as well as being Europe’s match-winner he won twice on this side of the Atlantic and twice in America, including the US Open — McDowell has yet to taste success this year.
“Let’s see if I can finish 2011 on a high,” he added. “I’m feeling fit, ready and happy with my game. I still feel a strong finish to the season is in me.”
Valderrama proved a happy hunting ground for Irish golfers last year, with Gareth Maybin and Damien McGrane both picking up over €220,000 by sharing second place behind McDowell.
And they could both do with a good cheque this week as they battle to make the top 115 in the money rankings to retain their cards for next year.
McGrane is presently in 107th place, but just €22,000 clear of the danger zone. Maybin’s situation is more precarious as he is one spot outside in 116th, although he is just €79 behind Spain’s Alejandro Canizares.
Walker Cup star Paul Cutler is also in the field and the Portstewart golfer knows he will need to finish in the top two to secure his card for next year after failing to make it through the first stage of qualifying school earlier this month.
Paul McGinley, Shane Lowry and Peter Lawrie are also in action at the event.
