McDowell seven off Hawaii lead

Golf:Robert Garrigus shot a stunning 10-under 63 to shoot to the top of the leaderboard at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii where US Open champion Graeme McDowell improved with a second round 67.

Garrigus played a near faultless round to reach the halfway stage on 14 under 132 for a one stroke lead on Sweden’s Carl Petterson, who carded a 67.

Garrigus parred his opening two holes before recording four consecutive birdies. On the inward half further birdies came at the 10 and 12 before making eagle at the par four 16th. The icing on the cake came with two closing birdies for the 10 under round.

Petterson carded five birdies plus an eagle at the fifth, with his only bogey of the day coming the ninth. Petterson was joint first leader with American Jonathan Byrd, who shot 68 to drop back to third.

McDowell’s six under 67 moved the 31-year-old up into a tie for 13th in the select 33-man field, while the second best performance of the day came from Ernie Els, whose 64 was enough to catapult the ‘Big Easy’ up 18 places into a share of fourth.

Alongside Els on 10 under are Steve Stricker (67), Jim Furyk (68) and Italian Francesco Molinari (67). Molinari’s Ryder Cup team-mate Ian Poulter improved in his opening 70 by two strokes, but remains six off the lead, one ahead of McDowell.
