Mayo footballer Ronan McGarrity has withdrawn from the county panel after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, team manager John O'Mahony revealed yesterday.
"We all wish Ronan the very best as he undergoes his treatment. I really admire the way he has handled the problem in the last few days and we hope he will return to the panel later in the season," said O'Mahony.
"He has been a very important footballer for Mayo in recent seasons and he is also a fine person."
McGarrity played for Mayo in the 2004 and 2006 All-Ireland football finals as well as continuing to play basketball at the highest level with Team Ballina. McGarrity, an All Star nominee at midfield last season, lined out in the recent National Football League game against Limerick.
Mayo play Fermanagh in round four of the league on Sunday, and O'Mahony will also be without David Brady and Kevin O'Neill, both of whom limped off injured against Limerick. Enda Devenney and Aidan Campbell have picked up injuries in recent days and are rated doubtful.
