Brendan McGovern found winning form at Seapoint yesterday for a second time in four days. This time it delivered a two-under-par 69 for the premier, net prize in the Mitsubishi Electric Links Society Outing.
In more difficult, windy conditions at the same venue last Monday, the Headfort professional shot a 72 for victory in the PGA Winter Series. "I'm really pleased to be playing so well at this time of the year, particularly after doing little or no practice during the winter," he said.
McGovern displayed exemplary consistency, carding 16 pars along with birdies at the fourth, where he hit a four-iron to six feet, and at the long 18th, which he reached with a four-iron second shot downwind. With a homeward journey of 35, he edged out Charlesland seven-handicapper Joe Somers on a countback.
In this context, Des Smyth had reason to rue three putts on the 18th, as his 69 would have been better than either of them. But a 70 was still good enough to give him the gross prize on a course he designed with Declan Branigan.
Leonard Owens, also had a 70 in this, the first Links visit to Seapoint. But the Royal Dublin professional produced far greater variety, albeit unintended, over the last four holes, carding double-bogey, birdie, birdie and a three-putt par.
