Austin McHale and Brian Murphy in a Toyota Corolla WRC are in with a good chance of outright victory in the Polish Rally, a European Championship event which runs today and tomorrow. Also competing are Eugene Meegan Jnr and Will White in a Honda Civic. Denis Biggerstaff in his Metro 6R4 heads the Irish entry in Sunday's Rallysprint in Barbados.
Cork Motor Club's Rally sprint at the Tipperary Raceway near Cashel on Sunday has attracted a quality entry headed by local driver Frank Meagher in a Ford Focus, Ulsterman Kenny McKinstry in a Subaru Impreza and Cork's Frank Mahony (Metro 6R4) and Barry Coleman (Impreza). Also entered are Eddie Kinnirons, Kieran Molloy, Des Ryan, Dave James, John Reid, Micky McArdle, Davey Aiken and Willie Singleton. The event will be held over a two-mile stage incorporating the hot-rod racing track, with each driver allocated three laps per timed session.
The famous Le mans 24Hours sports car classic will be staged on June 16/17th, but this weekend there is a 24-hour race at Mondello Park for Citroen 2CVs. The following weekend will see the Irish circuit playing host to the British Touring Car Championship for the first time. Motorcycle road racing is back in July in a big way with the Dundalk meeting on the 1st, followed by the Skerries 100 on the 7th, Race of the South at Walderstown near Athlone on the 14/15th and the Kells road races at Crossakiel, Co Meath, on the 21st and 22nd.
