Teenage golf sensation Rory McIlroy has earned a place on the Britain and Ireland team who will take on Continental Europe in the St Andrews Trophy in the Czech Republic next month.

The 17-year-old's domestic season saw him retain the West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point over the Easter period before going on to also retain the Irish Close at The European Club in Brittas Bay. He came very close to winning the Irish Amateur Open Championship too but was narrowly beaten at Portmarnock.

The Holywood golfer is one of three  newcomers to the side along with English champion Ross McGowan and Lytham Trophy winner Jamie Moul. Fellow teenager Oliver Fisher also makes the side.

The rest of the team is made up of Walker Cup players. They are: Nigel Edwards, Rhys Davies, Robert Dinwiddie, Lloyd Saltman and Richard Ramsay. The contest will be played on September 1st-2nd at Marianske Lazne in the Czech Republic.
