Golf:Rory McIlroy, who squeezed into the final two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship with nothing to spare, moved through the field with a third round 68 at Wentworth today.
The 22-year-old, who made it into the weekend on the four-over cut mark, jumped 36 places and into the top 20 on one-over with the low round of the day. It leaves him six shots off the pace - Luke Donald (72) and Matteo Manassero (72) lead the way on five-under - heading into the final round.
McIlroy reached the turn in two-under 33, courtesy of birdies at the fourth and sixth. Although a closing bogey took some of the shine of his round, further birdies were gleaned at the 16th and 17th.
McIlroy's round put him in a good mood for his other sporting date today - the Champions League final at Wembley where he hopes to see his beloved Manchester United defeat favourites Barcelona.
The world number six is a big Reds fan and even received a comforting text message from Alex Ferguson after his closing 80 at the US Masters last month.
McIlroy's former Ireland team-mate Shane Lowry also made up ground with his 69 to improve to two-over. Darren Clarke, the leading Irishman over the first two days, dropped back to join Lowry on two-over after his round of 74.
It was an untidy round for the Iberdrola Open winner as five birdies were offset by two bogeys, a double-bogey at 17 and a quadruple-bogey eight at the eighth.
Last week's winner Michael Hoey shot 74 for the second day running to drop back to six-over, while Gareth Maybin plummeted to 14-over after an 83.
