Curtis Cup: Mary McKenna, Ireland's most successful woman amateur golfer, has been appointed captain of the teams that will represent Britain and Ireland in the 2007 Vagliano Trophy and the 2008 Curtis Cup.
She will be assisted by Wales captain Tegwen Matthews, who has accepted the position of manager of both sides.
McKenna has an unrivalled record which includes winning eight Irish titles between 1969 and 1989 and playing in nine successive Curtis Cup matches.
In 2000 she was captain of the Britain and Ireland team at the World Amateur Team Championship.
"I am very really delighted with this great honour," she said before sounding a note of caution.
"With the 2008 Curtis Cup match being played early in the year - at St Andrews on May 31st to June 1st - it will be a challenge to pull the players together into a cohesive team."
US TOUR: Australia's Adam Scott overcame breezy conditions to charge into an early share of the lead at the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas yesterday.
Scott fired an opening five-under-par 65 on the TPC at Las Colinas, one of two courses being used for the first two rounds, to set the tournament pace with American Steve Lowery.
World number nine Scott mixed seven birdies with two bogeys while Lowery, who started out on the Cottonwood Valley Course, picked up five shots in a blemish-free display.
CHALLENGE TOUR: Colm Moriarty is six shots off the pace after the first round of the Challenge Tour Milan Open yesterday.
Moriarty fired a level par 71 to trail Spain's Alvaro Salto, who fired a six-under-par 65 to lead by one from Tiago Cruz (Portugal) and Spain's Juan Parron. Danny Sugrue and Brian McElhinney shot 73s while David Mortimer and John Kelly are on 75.
LET TOUR: New Zealander Lynnette Brooky set the course alight with a six-under-par 66 yesterday in the first round of the Women's Spanish Open at Panorámica G&CC in Castellon, and leads by a shot over Frenchwoman Gwladys Nocera, who started her campaign with a five under par 67.
Ireland's Rebecca Coakley birdied the first but dropped shots at the eighth and ninth in a one-over-par 73.
