SCHOOLS RUGBY VINNIE MURRAY CUP:WESLEY COLLEGE outhalf Ken McLaughlin held his nerve to fire the winning penalty one minute from time as they beat De La Salle Churchtown in the Leinster Schools (Section B) Vinnie Murray Cup quarter-final at Seapoint yesterday.

The vicious wind played a huge part in what was a typical winter forward battle. DLS fullback Michael Nevin and McLaughlin exchanged penalties to leave it looking like a replay would be required to separate these two, before McLaughlin’s intervention.

Outhalf Peter Lydon had one of those days he will never forget when scoring 15 points in Kilkenny College’s 20-15 defeat of St Andrew’s College at Donnybrook.

It was difficult not to feel some measure for sympathy for St Andrew’s who lost lock Cameron Weymes and fullback Will McGlade, one of their try scorers, to injury.
