WHILE Zimbabwe's world number 20, Mark McNulty, proved his, consistent form with a comfortable, four-stroke victory in the South African Masters at San Lameer yesterday, John McHenry enjoyed mixed fortunes with a closing 73 in sweltering but windy conditions.
McHenry combined two bogeys and a double bogey five at the fourth with four birdies to finish the tournament tied for 52nd place.
McNulty, the reigning Volvo Masters champion, carded a 67 - the low round of the day - for a total of 276, 12 under par.
Earlier rounds of 74, 78 and 76 over the previous days in torrential rain, blustery wind and on difficult, nappy greens left McHenry 25 shots off the lead - but still pleased by his general game.
"It's all very frustrating, as I feel I'm playing better here than I did last year. I hit the ball solidly but I just kept making mistakes. And I'm still battling to read these greens," the 32-year-old said.
"I am feeling rusty after my long break from the game and I just need to pull it all together. Obviously my emphasis here in South Africa will be on the European co-sanctioned events next month, but I would like to get my game together in time for the FNB Players Championship in Durban in a fortnight. I've still got special memories of that tournament after finishing joint second at the same venue two years ago."
