Clare SHC Final/ Wolfe Tones 2-11 Newmarket-on-Fergus 0-13: Wolfe Tones were crowned Clare senior hurling champions for the second time in their 40- year history thanks to a storming last quarter display in Cusack Park, Ennis, yesterday.

Captained by Barry Loughnane, son of former Clare and current Galway manager, Ger, they outscored Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-4 to 0-2 in the last 11 minutes to claim the title.

Shannon, backboned by All-Ireland-winners Brian and Frank Lohan, were made work very hard by a youthful Newmarket team appearing in their first final in 25 years. A more rounded team effort proved crucial for Wolfe Tones while Garret McPhillips's goal in the 49th minute turned the tide in the Shannon men's favour. They were trailing by 0-11 to 1-7 when McPhillips took a pass from Patsy Keyes to fire to the net from eight yards.

An early goal from Daithí O'Connell and three points from McPhillips helped Wolfe Tones lead 1-3 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. However, Newmarket were resilient and four points from wing forward Bernard Gaffney and a couple more from full forward David Barrett reduced the deficit to 1-6 to 0-7 at the interval.
