Ireland's Martin McTernan stormed into the second round of the British Boys' Open Amateur Championship at Hillside, Southport yesterday, beating Will Haddrell 3 and 2 in a high quality first round tussle.
The Co Sligo teenager was two down after five holes but after a succession of halves won the ninth, 10th and 11th to nose in front. McTernan took the 15th with a birdie three and the next with a par to close out the match. Portmarnock's James Fox was also in impressive form in seeing off the challenge of Bramley's Ryan Harrison by 3 and 2. Fox lost the opening hole but then took three-in-a-row from the third to establish an advantage he never looked like surrendering.
Philip McLaughlin of Ballyliffin had no problems in romping into round two with a 5 and 3 victory over Sussex youngster Henry Hilton. The run of Irish successes continued as Eoin Arthurs (Forrest Little), Derek McNamara (Connemara) and David Briden from the Gold Coast made their way safely into the second round. Arthurs performed solidly in seeing off the challenge of Mark Laskey by 4 and 3.
McNamara produced one of the outstanding displays of the day to crush Craig Moss by 6 and 5 and Briden always seemed to have the edge after winning the opening hole against French teenager Joachim Fourquet and triumphed 2 and 1.
