Meath are senior women's All-Ireland football champions for the first time, at their first attempt, denying Dublin five in a row with a thrilling victory at Croke Park. Dublin hadn't lost a Championship game since the 2016 final, the same year Meath chose to be relegated from the senior to intermediate ranks after suffering one trouncing after another, the most humiliating of all a 40-point defeat by Cork. The moral of this inspirational Meath story? Stick with it. Reflecting on his team's two point win, manager Eamonn Murray said: "These are heroes, and will be heroes for life if they never kick another ball. They'll go down in history."

Europe will take a two-point lead into the final day of the Solheim Cup after withstanding a determined fightback from the United States on day two in Toledo. Ireland's Leona Maguire has claimed the spotlight with an unbeaten run through four sessions of her maiden appearance in the sport's team showpiece. The 26-year-old Co Cavan golfer is "making her mark not just as a history maker in being the first Irishwoman to play in the biennial match but as the rookie stalwart of the European team." Patrick Cantlay has come out on top in his duel with world number one Jon Rahm to win the Tour Championship, FedEx Cup title and $15 million (€12.6 million) first prize in Atlanta.

Ireland captain Séamus Coleman has been ruled out of Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier against Serbia at the Aviva Stadium through injury. Following Saturday's draw with Azerbaijan, Ken Early thinks Ireland supporters must be patient with Stephen Kenny's team: "On and off the pitch, we'll get nowhere without patience." Last night's World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina was halted just minutes after kick-off after Brazilian health officials objected to the participation of three Argentine players they say broke quarantine rules.

Meanwhile, a memorable Paralympics ended with a stirring closing ceremony in Tokyo yesterday: "Beyond making for a modern, digital spectacle, the theme had a broader point. It was one the Paralympic Games have been trying to make from the start: that there are great differences in this world and they are not weaknesses but strengths, which, by coming together, can help to bring about a better future."
