US PGA TOUR: Rocco Mediate, enjoying full fitness after a career plagued by back injury, charged into an early three-shot lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational second round yesterday.
The 44-year-old American shrugged off swirling winds, intermittent rain and thick rough by firing a five-under-par 65 at the Bay Hill Club for a nine-under total of 131.
Mediate finished three ahead of England's Paul Casey (70). Canada's Stephen Ames (67) and American Shaun Micheel (68) were a further stroke behind at five-under-par.
Of the other early starters, 1998 winner Ernie Els carded a 70 to finish at one under, a couple of shots within the cut, and a stroke better than Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who followed his opening 72 with a 68.
SA WOMEN'S TOUR: Spain's Tania Elosegui claimed her maiden Ladies African Tour title, the Telkom Classic at Benoni Lakes Country Club.
Elosegui carded an even-par 72 for a three-round total of 204 and a one-stroke win over South Africa's Stacey Bregman and Rebecca Hudson of England.
Claire Coughlan finished on 224 after a final round of 72.
