Miles on the clock

Much has been made in the championship countdown to the miles clocked up by various teams

Much has been made in the championship countdown to the miles clocked up by various teams. A buzz phrase of the last few years, a team's "mileage" is taken into consideration when evaluating a county's chances and it seems to have superseded the notion of an "ageing" team. It has been employed in particular in relation to Wexford and it's easy to see why when you take into consideration the actual mileage statistics in the bar chart below - a third of the team are in their 10th-plus season, Tom Dempsey topping the chart as he settles into his 15th championship campaign. Indeed, in the build-up to their season opener against Dublin yesterday, manager Rory Kinsella seemed to be using the players' mileage as a motivational factor - as in this team has got to get things together this year, because it may have not too many campaigns left together. After yesterday's slow start, the "mileage" factor may get a few more outings when analysts come to assess their game with Offaly next Sunday week.
