Celtic yesterday confirmed they have agreed a pre-contract deal to sign Kenny Miller; the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward will move to Scotland at the end of the season on an initial three-year deal.
"It is a tremendous honour to have signed for a club of Celtic's stature," said the 26-year-old Scot. "I was fortunate enough to have a number of options; however, when Celtic made their interest known, this was where I wanted to play. Having spoken to Gordon Strachan and the club I am delighted to have committed my future to Celtic."
Miller will become one of the few post-war players to have played for both sides of the Old Firm. Alfie Conn played for Rangers then Celtic, via Tottenham, in the 1970s.
Fellow forward Mo Johnston, more controversially, joined Rangers in 1989 from Nantes after publicly saying he was looking forward to a second spell with Celtic.
Miller spent four years in the green and white of Hibernian before moving to Ibrox for £2 million in 2000. He struggled to make an impact with Rangers and was sold to Wolves for £3 million 18 months later.
One player who will not feature again at Parkhead is the Chinese defender Du Wei after Celtic failed to extend his loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua.
Du Wei is returning to Shanghai Shenhua after they refused Celtic's request for an extension to his loan spell. The defender signed an agreement on September 1st which allowed both parties to sever their links in the New Year.
The 23-year-old was reluctant to leave Parkhead despite making just one first-team start in the now-infamous Scottish Cup third round exit at Clyde.
After being hauled off at half-time in that game, manager Strachan also tried to extend the player's loan period until the end of the season before talking money. But the Chinese club refused to meet those demands and the player has been ordered to return home.
A Celtic spokesperson said: "Clearly, we're disappointed that an agreement couldn't be reached to keep Du Wei at Celtic. Everyone at the club sincerely wishes him all the very best for the future."
Roy Keane is set to continue in defence against Motherwell on Sunday with Stephen McManus suspended and Bobo Balde away on international duty at the African Nations Cup with Guinea.
Hibernian's forward Dean Shiels is to have an operation to remove his right eye. It had been a well kept secret that Shiels, who joined Hibs from Arsenal in the summer of 2004, has had no sight in the eye since the age of eight after an accident at his family home in Northern Ireland. The 20-year-old, who has recently featured in Lawrie Sanchez's international squad, has not trained for a month after pain from a build-up of burst blood vessels led him to seek professional advice.
An operation to remove the eye completely is now necessary and Shiels will not play football again until the start of next season at the earliest. "While it is important that the fans understand the reason that I am not involved at the moment, I don't want people to make too big a deal of this," he said.
"I will be very happy if I am just allowed to get on with the operation and then get back to playing football once I have fully recovered."
