Lightweights Uruguay plan to keep alive the spirit of amateur rugby union in the first World Cup of the professional era.

After arriving in Scotland late on Monday to prepare for their opening Pool A match against Spain in the Scottish Borders on Saturday, Uruguay coach Daniel Herrera said: "We are here flying the flag of amateur rugby.

"It will good for our game to be seen on television playing against South Africa, the world champions, and Scotland, the Five Nations champions." Uruguay, who have just one professional player in their ranks, face an immense task and Herrera is realistic about Uruguay's presence in the World Cup finals: "I regard it as a big achievement for us to be here," he said. "When we watched the World Cup on television in 1995 we never dreamed of being in the finals four years later."
